In website development speak I’m okay until the techies begin to throw around the initials, then my eyes glaze over and I run for my quiet place! For the entrepreneur who wants to be savvy and work in their backend they do need to know some acronyms to be successful. Here is my list of the top three most important:
CMS: Content Management System
Content Management Systems help you do just that — manage content. A CMS makes it much easier to add, delete, and organize content all across your site which saves time and money. Other advantages include better SEO, improved visitor experience and the ability to engage quickly and effectively. For our clients we use the WordPress CMS Platform, which we feel is the most intuitive and well serviced CMS currently. You can update, engage and have multiple users – all in the ‘cloud.’
UI: User Interface
How the visitor interacts and engages on your website. What can you do to make your site easy to navigate, self explanatory, efficient and user-friendly? Involve your web designer when you are drafting your original goals so they can build success into your UI.
SEM: Search Engine Marketing
Think of SEM as the marketing industry umbrella for all things search and SEO as one of the many deliverables your marketing team can offer. SEM plans encompass normal SEO products like meta-keywords, meta-tags, and SEO-minded copywriting or it could include using direct marketing products like Pay-Per-Click keyword marketing plans through Google AdWords or BingAds– SEM represents all of that.
